Skills of the 21st Century
Critical thinking and problem-solving
Good cognitive and social and behavioral skills are necessary for gaining and improving technical skills throughout life. They make workers more resilient to technology-driven labor market shocks like automation and AI. Companies need to be able to continuously improve products, processes and services in order to compete. And to do this they need workers to have critical thinking skills and to be able to ask the right questions to get to the bottom of a problem. At an increasingly fast rate given technological change, we require constant upgrading.
Curiosity and Imagination
These are what drive innovation and are key to problem solving. “The real key is being able to imagine a new world. Once I imagine something new, then answering how to get from here to there involves steps of creativity. So I can be creative in solving today’s problems, but if I can’t imagine something new, then I’m stuck in the current situation,” Seely Brown. Through project-based learning, students have the freedom to make choices and decisions that effect what happens next. It's a great way to enhance curiosity and imagination.
Initiative and Entrepreneurialism
As the global middle class expands, there will massive opportunities for entrepreneurs to create more efficient industries and more productive business ecosystems. Technologies and industries will collide in new and unexpected ways, and these mash-ups, inspired in part by scarcity, will potentially produce greater utility and prosperity for society at large. Dealing with resource scarcity will compel companies to adopt new technologies, new processes, and new management practices; all of which will drive innovation faster and faster.
Does Bilingualism improve your life?
The past 15 years have witnessed an overwhelming amount of research on the bilingual mind, with the majority of the evidence pointing to the tangible advantages of using more than one language. Now new research shows that they can also view the world in different ways depending on the specific language they are operating in. Going back and forth between languages appears to be a kind of brain training, pushing your brain to be flexible. Bilinguals get all the benefits. Better job prospects, a cognitive boost and even protection against dementia.
Collaboration across networks and leading by influence
Given the interconnected nature of the business world, leadership skills and the ability to influence and work together as a team has become increasingly important. Managing complexity and inspiring engagement are capabilities that are newer to the degree of complexity that today’s global, technologically driven organizations face which was unknown a generation ago. More than ever, today’s leaders need the ability to view organizations and environments as complex, interconnected systems, and manage them as such.
Agility and Adaptability
Technology is always changing and so is the workplace. Your openness towards learning new skills with a positive attitude can lead you to have a great lifestyle, since this reflects your desire and ability to grow and adapt to new circumstances and challenges throughout your work life. The ability to adapt and pick up new skills quickly is vital for success. Workers must be able to use a range of tools to solve a problem. This is also known as "learnability", a sought-after skills among job candidates.
